Claudia Graf is a Munich based artist whose work combines painting, relief and three dimensional elements.
She is particularly known for her sculptural butterfly artworks. For Graf, the butterfly is not simply a symbol of beauty. It represents transformation, visibility, personal development and the moment when something that has remained hidden begins to emerge.
Her works incorporate materials such as modelling paste, pigments, gold leaf, copper, neon colours and other textural elements. Through the interaction of surface, colour, light and three dimensionality, each artwork changes depending on its surroundings and the viewer’s perspective. Her pieces are designed not only to be seen, but to be experienced within a space.
Alongside her butterfly works, Claudia Graf develops additional series exploring themes such as time, as well as a New York City inspired body of work featuring iconic subjects including the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and elements of the urban landscape.
Her artistic process is intuitive and largely free from preliminary sketches. In the studio, she follows the material, movement and an inner image that gradually reveals itself throughout the creative process.
